Apple TV’s WIDOWS BAY Trailer Unleashes Coastal Horror With Matthew Rhys at the Center

There’s something seriously off about the quiet little town in Widow’s Bay, and the first teaser makes that crystal clear. Apple TV is diving into eerie waters with this upcoming genre mashup, blending supernatural horror with a streak of dark comedy.

At the center of it all is Matthew Rhys, playing a mayor who’s way out of his depth in a place that might actually be cursed. It looks like it’ll be a great show!

The footage leans hard into the unsettling vibe. Strange occurrences creep in, locals act like they know more than they’re saying, and Rhys’ character looks increasingly rattled as things spiral. But it isn’t all dread and doom.

There’s a sharp comedic edge running through it that keeps things from getting too heavy, giving the show a personality that stands out from standard horror fare.

Here’s the official description of the story, and it paints a pretty bleak picture for anyone thinking of visiting:

“Something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no wifi, spotty cellular reception, and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed.

“He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination.

“Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again.”

This isn’t just a monster-of-the-week situation. It’s about a guy trying to prove himself while everything around him confirms he probably shouldn’t be in charge of anything, especially not a cursed island.

The cast backing Rhys includes Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey, with K Callan and Jeff Hiller adding even more flavor to the ensemble.

The creative force behind the show is Katie Dippold, known for projects like Ghostbusters (2016) and Haunted Mansion. She’s steering the series as creator and showrunner, and she’s pulling inspiration from a legendary source. As she explained:

“The big reference we have in the series is Jaws, which was an enormous draw and attraction for me as it is truly one of my favorite films.”

There’s a similar setup here, a community ignoring danger until it’s too late, mixed with a central figure trying to hold things together while everything falls apart.

On the directing side, we have Hiro Murai, known for Barry and Atlanta, directing five episodes and also serves as an executive producer through his banner Chum Films. He’s joined by Ti West, Sam Donovan, and others, giving the series a mix of styles that should keep things visually interesting and unpredictable.

The teaser hints that Widow’s Bay isn’t just about what’s lurking in the shadows. It’s about fear, denial, and a guy who probably should’ve taken the hint when the locals said the place was cursed. Instead, he doubled down. Now he gets to deal with the consequences.

The series rolls out globally on April 29, 2026, kicking off with two episodes before settling into a weekly release schedule through June 17. There’s also a double-episode drop on May 27 for anyone who gets hooked early, which feels very likely after watching this teaser.
