Aragorn Recast Confirmed for THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM as Andy Serkis Teases the Search for a New Ranger

Middle-earth is calling us back once again, but this time there’s a major shake-up involving one of its most iconic heroes. It was previously reported that Viggo Mortensen would not return as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, but now director and Gollum actor Andy Serkis has officially confirmed it.

Serkis opened up about the casting situation in a recent interview, and revealed the search is already underway for a new actor.

“I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone.”

Steppiing into Aragorn’s boots won’t be an easy task for any actor. Mortensen’s performance in The Lord of the Rings trilogy is legendary, and whoever takes over will be under a serious spotlight. He will be heavily judged and compared to everything that Mortensen brought to the role.

Serkis also shed some light on what fans can expect from the film itself, and it sounds like it’ll dig into both action and character in a meaningful way.

“We’ve got to keep it all back,” Serkis told ScreenRant about not revealing additional information about his movie.

“I mean, look, other than, I think it’s probably common knowledge, but our film takes place between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and it’s ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we’re just about on the launchpad now, and it’s very exciting. And yeah, it’s going to be a big ride.”

It sounds like Gollum’s fractured mind will play a big role in the story, which fits perfectly with what Serkis has done with the character in the past.

As for the cast, things are still mostly under wraps. Kate Winslet is officially on board, though her role is being kept secret. We also know that Ian McKellen will return as Gandalf with Elijah Wood most likely coming back as Frodo.

Wood has already shared his thoughts on the idea of recasting such a beloved character, and he didn’t sugarcoat it.

“I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able,” Wood said. “It’s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth.

“Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.

“I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema, and you see the hat turn around, and it’s Gandalf,” Wood added. “Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together.”

That pretty much sums up the vibe right now. There’s a lot of excitement, but also a bit of nervous energy about how this new chapter will fit into such a beloved fantasy saga.

Peter Jackson is producing alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, which should give fans some confidence that the tone and world-building will stay true to what came before.

Warner Bros. and New Line aren’t stopping with just one film either. The Hunt for Gollum is one of two new Lord of the Rings projects currently in development. The film is gearing up to start shooting this year and is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.

Stephen Colbert is also currently writting an installment in the The Lord of the Rings film franchise for New Line Cinema. Colbert revealed his is zeroing in on a very specific part of Tolkien's story, chapters three through eight of The Fellowship of the Ring, including the creepy "Fog on the Barrow-downs.”

Recasting Aragorn is a wild move, and it’ll be interesting to see who end up in the role.
