ARCHIE TV Series Coming To The CW

In recent news, Archie is coming to TV. That's comic-based, right? Sure, it's not a superhero comic, but it might be worth keeping an eye on. Why, you ask? Well, it has to do with what they are planning to do with Archie.

An Archie TV series has been rumored for about a year now. Originally it was thought to be in the works at Fox, but now it has been announced that The CW will be producing this hour-long series. It will be a bit darker than usual, with rumors that it will be exploring the seedy underbelly of Archie. I haven't been so excited to see a gritty reboot of something since Archie meets Punisher.

The writer of the pilot is Robert Aguirre-Sacasa who is known for writing episodes of Glee, Big Love, and Looking. "Oh no!" you say, "those don't sound comic booky and fun at all!" But wait, there's more! Aguirre-Sacasa also wrote the reboot of Carrie and a comic series known as Afterlife with Archie, which is a dark reinterpretation of Archie during the Zombie Apocalypse. RIGHT?! I didn't even know something like that existed! Now I want to read them all. Aguirre-Sacasa had this to say about the series.

“When Greg (Berlanti) and I started talking about bringing these characters to life, our first thought was that the best home for them would be the CW. It took a little longer for us to get there, but now that we’re here, it’s feeling terrific.”

The series will be called Riverdale and it will focus on Archie and the Gang, but also have guests like Josie and the Pussycats, and — fingers crossed — maybe even Sabrina? That last one is mostly wishful thinking. What is Melissa Joan Hart doing now, anyways? Not that I'd really want her to take the role again. Maybe she could be one of Sabrina's aunts. That would be nostalgilicous.

Overall, I'm excited for this new series. If there is one network that has got the comic book adaptation of superheroes down, it's The CW. I am a huge fan of Arrow, Flash, and especially iZombie. They just work so well in the world The CW has provided. The network is slowly starting to move out of the Dawson's Creek era and into something much better.
