ARTEMIS FOWL Begins Principal Photography

Kenneth Branagh is directing Disney’s adaptation of the book Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer and it is starting principal photography. This is very exciting. I read the first book (the one the movie is based on) back in college and I really enjoyed it. The movie will be filmed in England, Northern Ireland, and Ho Chi Minh City. If you haven’t read the books, here’s a brief synopsis for you:

Artemis Fowl II is the twelve-year-old prodigy, who has dedicated his life to criminal activities. He leads the Fowl criminal empire, which has been established by his family for generations. After significant research, Artemis believes that he has confirmed the existence of fairies.

It wasn’t a particularly long book, so I think there’s hope for a movie adaptation to work well. I’m really intrigued to see how our star Ferdia Shaw does, Shaw is a newcomer which is refreshing in an era of movies that only have big names attached to them. I hope the risk pays off. He will be joined by some big names though like Judi Dench as Commander Root who is the steely leader of the fairy police force, and Josh Gad as Mulch Diggums who is a kleptomaniacal dwarf.

Artemis Fowl is currently slated for release on August 9, 2019.
