August is Bombshells Month at DC Comics
DC’s Bombshells line of statues has been a fan favorite since the first wave was launched. The line has also been responsible for some of the coolest costume designs in a while, so I’m enthused to see this section of the DCU spotlighted again this coming August, when it is officially Bombshells month at DC Comics.
Debuting that month will be the digital first DC Bombshells ongoing comic book series, written by Marguerite Bennett and drawn by Marguerite Sauvage. The premise puts Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Batwoman fighting on the front lines of World War II. The combination of heroes here has me jazzed, especially the inclusion of Batwoman, and the creative team seems really enthusiastic. Here is what Bennett had to say about the book:
"DC COMICS BOMBSHELLS is one of the wildest things I've ever had the pleasure to create--a story of the DC heroines, all the DC heroines, in a crisis that defines themselves as well as their generation,” explains writer Marguerite Bennett. "I cannot possibly tell you how excited and grateful I am to be involved in a story this massive and inventive. The series will explore war stories, romances, mysteries, heists, action adventure, and horror in a way that only these characters could do--I cannot wait for this book to drop. Pun very much intended."
As for the art, here is a bit from Sauvage:
"When I was contacted to work on this book, I was attracted by the retro style of the statues, not to mention the most iconic female characters of DC are represented,” explains artist Marguerite Sauvage. "And then when I read Marguerite's script, I was really excited and totally convinced by the story, the tone and the universe and time it will take place. In terms of artistic approach, I focused on page layouts and more on graphics than on a realistic approach. I spent a lot of time searching for references to be as accurate as possible to the story and habits of this time period, but keeping in mind it's a parallel universe, so I can take some freedom on details."
To go along with the new ongoing series, covers of DC books will include the Bombshell variant theme, including Aquaman, Green Lantern, Huntress, Ravager, Killer Frost, and more.
Speaking of Killer Frost, DC has also debuted two new additions to the statue line that started it all, including Frost and Cheetah. Cheetah looks great, but I can’t say enough good things about that Killer Frost design. I just love it. These will ship sometime in 2016.
Last but not least, DC Universe Online will have some new playable Bombshells as well. There aren't any other details at the moment, but I continue to be happily surprised with how much they have supported that game.
I'm pretty happy with all that, but what other themed months would you like to see in the future?
