AVATAR 2 Star Speaks About Whether He Believes the Sequel Has a Chance to Win Back the Box Office Record

James Cameron’s Avatar was the highest grossing domestic movie in history for a decade. From 2009 to 2019, the film held the title, until Avengers: Endgame came along and bumped it into second place. Avatar still hold the highest grossing international record for a film, which is a huge accomplishment, and fans are waiting to see if the next four films (coming out every two years beginning in 2021) will hold up as well, or even take back the title of highest grossing domestic film.

Actor Stephen Lang, who played Colonel Miles Quartich in the first film and is signed on to play the character in the sequels, recently spoke to The National about the upcoming films. When asked how it felt to be asked back, he said:

“It’s very satisfying to know that the character was valued enough and made enough of an impression to [have Cameron] say ‘we’re not done with him yet’. That, initially, was kind of wonderful, to me. My job is really to advocate the role that I’m playing, and so it’s satisfying to have that much more time to discover Quaritch, find out what makes him tick, talk about him, and hopefully defy expectations that people have for the character, to create new expectations.”

And when asked if he thinks Avatar 2 will take back the title of highest grossing, he simply said:

“I expect so.”

It’s cool that Lang gets to come back to reprise his role, and I’m sure working with Cameron on such an incredibly large scale project is a dream come true. I think it’s not out of the question to think the sequel has a chance, but I actually don’t believe it will beat Avengers: Endgame. What do you think?

Avatar 2 is currently filming and is expected to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
