AVATAR 4 Will Hand the Storytelling Torch to Sigourney Weaver, and She’s Known for 12 Years
James Cameron’s Avatar saga has always been guided by Jake Sully’s voice, with Sam Worthington narrating audiences through the wonders and dangers of Pandora. That tradition is about to change. When Avatar 4 arrives, a new narrator will step in, and it’s a shift in the story that’s been quietly planned for more than a decade.
Sigourney Weaver, who plays Kiri in the franchise, recently revealed that she’ll be taking over narration duties for the fourth film.
Speaking with Jake’s Takes, Weaver explained: "I narrate the next one, [Avatar 4]," adding, "It's a major part of the saga for Kiri." It’s a meaningful evolution for the character and a clear signal that the story focus is moving in a new direction.
What makes the reveal even wilder is how long Weaver has been sitting on this information. She confirmed she was told about the plan back in 2013, around the same time Cameron was mapping out the long game for the sequels.
According to her, while ideas may have evolved over time, the core vision remains intact. "[James Cameron] may have changed some ideas but [Avatar 4 and Avatar 5] are still, as far as I know, what he wrote back then… it's a big shift in four and five.”
That “big shift” lines up with what fans have suspected for a while. The Avatar films are slowly transitioning away from Jake Sully as the central guide and toward the next generation on Pandora. Letting Kiri take the narrative reins feels like a natural progression, especially given her mysterious connection to the world and its future.
Avatar 4 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2029, though there’s ongoing chatter about whether Cameron might eventually step back from directing the later entries. The filmmaker himself doesn’t seem eager to pass the torch just yet. "I mean, there's no reason not to. I'm healthy, I'm good to go.”
Still, he admits nothing is guaranteed when looking that far ahead. "I'm not going to rule it out. I mean, I've got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that."
Whether Cameron stays in the director’s chair or not, Avatar is heading into a new phase, with Kiri leading the story.
