THE LEGEND OF AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER Animator Slams Fans Pirating Leaked Movie as “Incredibly Disrespectful”
The upcoming The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender movie has already found itself in the middle of some unexpected drama, and the creators aren’t happy about it.
Instead of building hype for its release, the conversation has shifted to the full movie being leaked online, and the backlash from fans protesting the film’s move to streaming. Now, one of the film’s animators is speaking out, and they’re not holding back.
Julia Schoel, who worked on the long-awaited animated sequel, took to social media to vent frustration over how the situation has unfolded. After years of work poured into the project, seeing unfinished or leaked footage circulate online clearly hit a nerve.
Schoel wrote, "We worked on the Aang movie for years with the expectation that’d we’d get to celebrate all of our hard work in theaters.. just to see people unceremoniously leak the film and pass our shots around on Twitter like candy."
The frustration isn’t just about the leak itself, but how some fans are justifying it. Many viewers have been vocal about their disappointment after Paramount decided to shift the film from a theatrical release to streaming on Paramount+. While that decision hasn’t exactly gone over well, Schoel made it clear that piracy isn’t the answer.
They added, "I don’t like seeing people use Paramount's awful decision to remove the movie from theaters to justify leaking it. I totally understand folks not wanting to pay for/support Paramount Plus, but pirating the movie after its release would have at least been better than this. This is incredibly disrespectful to all of the hard work the artists put in."
That sentiment was echoed by fellow animator Tom Barkel, who pointed out that situations like this can have bigger consequences than fans might realize.
Barkel said, "This jeopardizes future work for artists in an increasingly hostile industry. Don't oversimplify please. That being said, the movie itself is a beautiful feat of art. So proud to be involved. If you engage with it and enjoy it then support it so there can be more art!"
The leak itself reportedly started making the rounds over the weekend, with one social media user claiming they had been “accidentally” sent the full film. From there, it spread quickly across the internet, even as takedown efforts tried to contain it.
As of now, the source of the leak hasn’t been identified, but the damage has already been done. Clips and full versions of the movie have continued to circulate despite ongoing efforts to remove them.
Directed by Lauren Montgomery, with Steve Ahn and William Mata also helming the project, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is set after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The story follows Avatar Aang, the world’s last Airbender, as he uncovers an ancient power capable of saving his culture from extinction. Alongside his friends, Aang embarks on a global quest to secure that power before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to shatter the fragile peace they fought to protect.
The voice cast includes Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Dee Bradley Baker, Freida Pinto, and Ke Huy Quan, joining previously announced cast members Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Jessica Matten, Dionne Quan, Román Zaragoza, and Steven Yeun.
The movie is still scheduled to premiere on Paramount+ on October 9. Whether this controversy impacts its reception remains to be seen, but one thing is clear, the artists behind it are asking fans to think twice about how they choose to support the stories they love.
