AVATAR AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER Scores a Surprise Limited Theatrical Release
After months of frustration, fan campaigns, and one major leak, Avatar fans are finally getting what they wanted. In a turn of events welcomed by fans, Paramount is walking back its previous decision and will now release Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender in theaters.
It's been a strange journey for the highly anticipated animated movie. When Avatar Studios was announced back in February 2021, one of the biggest promises was an animated feature centered on an adult Aang that would make its way to theaters. Those plans eventually changed.
Following a lengthy production pause, rising costs, and shifting priorities, Paramount made the disappointing decision in December 2025 to skip theaters altogether and release Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender exclusively on Paramount+.
Fans didn't take the news well. The backlash online was immediate, and things only escalated after the completed film leaked earlier this year. The leak reportedly pushed Paramount to move the movie's release date forward from October 2027 to this July.
Now the studio has made another unexpected change, and this one is much easier to celebrate. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will receive a limited theatrical run from July 24 through July 30, while still making its streaming debut on Paramount+ beginning July 25.
While Paramount hasn't officially explained the reversal, it's believed the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the film's trailer helped influence the decision.
There's also plenty of speculation that the limited theatrical engagement is designed to make the movie eligible for next year's Academy Awards. Whatever the reason, fans finally get the chance to experience Aang's latest adventure in a theater, even if the release is extremely limited.
There is a catch, though. The film will only screen three times a day at two locations: AMC Burbank Town Center 6 in Los Angeles and AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan.
Tickets went on sale on July 16 at 9:00 a.m. ET / 6:00 a.m. PT, and as of this writing, every available showing has already sold out.
The quick sellout has fueled optimism that Paramount could add more screenings in the coming days, and perhaps even expand the release to additional cities. There's also another opportunity for fans to catch the film, as Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will screen during San Diego Comic-Con next week.
Based on the beloved animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the film tells a brand-new story set in the Avatar universe:
"Aang learn of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve."
The voice cast includes Eric Nam as Aang, Dave Bautista as Tagah, Jessica Matten as Katara, Román Zaragoza as Sokka, Steven Yeun as Zuko, and Dionne Quan as Toph.
Fans have spent years hoping this movie would receive the theatrical treatment it was originally promised. Even though it's only a one-week engagement in two cities, it's still a welcome victory after everything that's happened over the last several months.
Hopefully, the overwhelming demand sends a clear message to Paramount that Avatar belongs on the big screen. If the sold-out screenings are any indication, there are plenty of fans ready to buy a ticket the moment more theaters are added.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender premieres on Paramount+ on July 25, with its limited theatrical run beginning one day earlier on July 24.
