AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH Ignites with First Clip, Featurette, and Posters as Tickets Go on Sale
Fans of James Cameron’s epic sci fi saga finally have something new to dive into because tickets for Avatar: Fire and Ash are officially available.
A new clip, a behind the scenes featurette, and a stack of gorgeous posters all arrived today, giving us our best look yet at the next chapter of Pandora.
The clip spotlights the younger Sully kids as they flee through dense jungle terrain while being hunted by the franchise’s new antagonist, Varang, the hardened leader of the Ash People known as the Mangkwan Clan.
Oona Chaplin brings Varang to life, and Cameron has been very open about what shaped her. He explained, "Varang is the leader of a people who have gone through an incredible hardship. She's hardened by that. She will do anything for them, even things that we would consider to be evil." Her presence in the footage sets a fierce and intense tone for what the Sully family will be up against.
Running at 3 hours and 15 minutes, Fire and Ash is now the longest entry in the franchise. For comparison, the original Avatar came in at 2 hours and 42 minutes, while Avatar: The Way of Water ran for 3 hours and 12 minutes.
Cameron is clearly continuing the expansive storytelling approach he began with the second film, and he recently shared what makes this one stand apart. He said:
"The big [creative] advance in [Fire and Ash] is just going to be greater character depth. We're seeing new cultures, new creatures all the same stuff you'd expect from an Avatar movie, but the whole idea of this cycle of films is to live with these people and go on this epic journey with them.
“So I think it's not about, 'We're going to show you the best water [VFX] ever done' but you get more into the heart and soul of the characters. And there's some very interesting new characters that come in as well. This is a journey over time. It will play out through movie three, into movie four and movie five. There's an epic cycle to the whole thing."
Cameron’s first two Pandora adventures were enormous box office giants, and Fire and Ash looks positioned to keep that momentum going this December. That hype gets an extra boost now that it’s confirmed the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday will play before the movie, which will definitely draw even more audiences into theaters.
The returning cast for Avatar 3includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, Matt Gerald, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Jemaine Clement, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, and Duane Evans, along with David Thewlis joining as a new character named Paylak.
After navigating multiple delays, Avatar: Fire and Ash finally arrives in theaters on December 19. Cameron already has Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 lined up, with both sequels currently in production and slated for release in 2029 and 2031.
