AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Prequel Series AVATAR KURUK: WAVE OF CHAOS Will Explore the Rebellious Avatar's Early Years
The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting another animated series, and this time we're heading into the past to explore the life of one of the franchise's most mysterious Avatars.
During New York Comic Con 2026, Avatar Studios announced Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, a new prequel series in development for Paramount+ that will follow a younger version of Avatar Kuruk, a character whose tragic history makes him one of the more fascinating figures in Avatar lore.
Fans of the original animated series will remember Kuruk as one of Aang's predecessors, but we've only gotten glimpses of his life. Additional stories have since revealed that his time as the Avatar was filled with darkness, personal struggles, and tragedy. Now we'll finally get to see how his journey began.
The new series will introduce Kuruk as a “rebellious teenager” who decides to master the four elements on his own rather than follow the traditional path expected of an Avatar.
That's an interesting direction for the character, especially knowing where his story eventually leads. Watching a young, headstrong Kuruk figure out his responsibilities while making his own rules could make for a pretty awesome story.
Bryan Konietzko, who co-created the original series with Michael DiMartino, is returning as showrunner. The project is being developed through Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation Studios, although details regarding the voice cast and additional creative talent haven't been announced.
There's also no confirmed release date or premiere window for Avatar Kuruk: Wave of Chaos, so it could be a while before we see the series arrive on Paramount+.
The announcement is another sign that Paramount is committed to expanding the Avatar universe. Avatar Studios was established by Konietzko and DiMartino alongside Nickelodeon and Paramount to develop new animated movies and shows that explore different characters and periods throughout the franchise's history.
The studio already has several major projects in motion, including the animated feature Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender and the sequel series Avatar: Seven Havens, which moves the story forward beyond the events of The Legend of Korra.
While the Aang movie faced some trouble with an early leak and its move to Paramount+, those issues don't appear to have slowed the studio's larger plans.
Meanwhile, Avatar: Seven Havens kicked off its run on Paramount+ this month, and the New York Comic Con panel also confirmed two additional seasons, bringing the show's planned total to four.
With Seven Havens exploring the future of the Avatar cycle and Wave of Chaos digging into its history, fans will get to experience two very different eras of the franchise.
Kuruk is an especially interesting choice for a prequel because his story has so much room to explore. We know his life eventually takes a devastating turn, but there's still plenty to learn about the person he was before everything went wrong.
I'm curious to see how the creative team handles his rebellious personality and what events ultimately shape him into the Avatar we've heard so much about.
