AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Officially Confirms Hayley Atwell Is Returning as Peggy Carter
Marvel Studios has finally made it official. During the Marvel Studios panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans got confirmation that Hayley Atwell will reprise her beloved role as Peggy Carter in Avengers: Doomsday.
The announcement answers one of the biggest questions surrounding the film’s already massive cast.
Ever since Marvel teased Doomsday with its record-breaking cast reveal livestream, fans have been wondering which familiar MCU faces were still waiting in the wings.
Now, one of Captain America’s most important allies has officially joined the lineup.
Last year, Marvel kicked off production on Avengers: Doomsday with a marathon livestream that revealed 27 cast members over the course of several hours.
Afterward, Kevin Feige hinted there were still more casting announcements on the way. Since then, the only major addition confirmed had been Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers.
Comic-Con finally brought another major reveal with Atwell’s long-awaited return.
While Marvel kept Peggy Carter under wraps until now, her involvement always felt like a logical next step.
Doomsday appears to pick up threads left behind by Avengers: Endgame, and one of the biggest fan theories suggests that Steve Rogers’ decision to remain in the past with Peggy may have unintentionally helped trigger the incursions threatening the multiverse.
The first teaser for Doomsday even appeared to support that idea, showing Steve back in the past living the life he always wanted, including a glimpse of him holding his baby.
If Steve’s peaceful ending is tied to the collapse of reality, it would’ve been hard to imagine Peggy not playing some role in that story.
The real question now is how much screen time she’ll actually have.
If Steve’s actions are central to the film’s story, Peggy could become much more than a supporting character.
Throughout the MCU, she’s proven herself to be an exceptional strategist and fearless leader. Even without superpowers, she’d be a valuable ally as the Avengers attempt to stop Doctor Doom and repair the fractured multiverse.
On the other hand, Marvel could choose to use Peggy in a much smaller capacity, similar to her brief but meaningful appearance in Endgame.
That would certainly help flesh out Steve’s story, but it might leave fans wanting more from one of the MCU’s most beloved characters.
There’s also another exciting possibility. Since Doomsday is diving headfirst into the multiverse, Atwell may end up playing more than one version of Peggy.
While the Captain Carter audiences met in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness met a brutal end at the hands of Wanda Maximoff, that hardly closes the door on other variants.
Seeing Captain Carter return with her shield alongside Steve Rogers would be an incredible moment for Marvel fans.
It wouldn’t carry the same emotional history that Steve shares with his own Peggy, but it would still be a thrilling pairing to watch on the battlefield.
Of course, every new casting announcement also adds another challenge for Joe Russo and Anthony Russo.
Doomsday already has an enormous roster of heroes and villains, and making each one feel meaningful won’t be easy.
The Russo brothers built their reputation with the Infinity Saga by balancing huge ensembles while delivering emotional payoffs that felt earned over years of storytelling.
This time, they’ll have a different obstacle to overcome. The Multiverse Saga hasn’t had the same tightly connected buildup, so Avengers: Doomsday will need to give its growing cast clear reasons to be part of the story instead of simply bringing familiar faces back for nostalgia.
Peggy Carter is one of the MCU’s most enduring fan favorites. Now that Atwell’s return is official, here’s hoping Avengers: Doomsday gives her a role that’s worthy of the character instead of treating her as just another cameo.
If Marvel is bringing Peggy Carter back into the fight, fans will be hoping she has a real impact on the future of the MCU.
