AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Reportedly Casts Sandra Hüller as Mystery of Doctor Doom’s Latverian Witches Takes a Turn
The mystery surrounding Doctor Doom’s masked Latverian Witches in Avengers: Doomsday may have just become a lot less mysterious. A new stunt performer listing appears to point to the three actresses playing the characters, including Sandra Hüller, and it could put several popular fan theories to rest.
Ever since the Latverian Witches were revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, fans have been trying to figure out who might be hiding beneath those masks. Scarlet Witch, Clea, and Sylvie have been among the biggest guesses, but the latest information suggests these women really might just be new characters from Latveria.
Stunt performer Stevie Parker has an updated listing on the British Stunt Register that credits her with doubling for Hüller, Katya Hazel Boirand, and Josie Pocock in Avengers: Doomsday. While Marvel hasn’t confirmed their roles, there are rumblings that the three actresses are playing Doom’s Latverian Witches.
Hüller, who recently starred in Project Hail Mary, is easily the most recognizable name of the trio. Boirand previously appeared in Citadel, while Pocock has had smaller roles in Barbie and The Running Man.
If the report is true, fans probably shouldn’t expect the three witches to suddenly pull off their masks and reveal Scarlet Witch, Clea, or Sylvie. That raises the quest, why has Doctor Doom surrounded himself with three Latverian Witches?
The Russo Brothers clearly have a reason for introducing these characters, especially with Doom's command of magic expected to be an important part of the movie.
It has also previously been reported that at least one of the witches will appear as Peggy Carter when Doom gets inside Steve Rogers’ head, suggesting the characters could be used as part of his psychological attacks.
The Russos recently explained just how dangerous Doom’s combination of magic, intelligence, and careful planning makes him:
"Doom's magic is an ancient magic. He is a very powerful character. He's a genius. He studies his foes. He understands them, and he's also well-planned. He's not somebody who just does something off the cuff. Everything is meticulous with him."
The filmmakers added, "He knows that if he's going to step on a battlefield against somebody, he has to have the tactical advantage or a power advantage against that person. So he's very difficult to beat."
Doctor Doom isn’t simply another powerhouse who shows up looking for a fight. He understands who he’s fighting, figures out where they’re vulnerable, and makes sure the odds are already tilted in his favor before the battle begins.
In Avengers: Doomsday, heroes from three different universes will find themselves thrown onto a deadly collision course as they confront an existential threat unlike anything they’ve faced before.
If Hüller, Boirand, and Pocock really are the Latverian Witches, Marvel may have successfully turned what looked like a guessing game about secret identities into a different mystery entirely.
These characters may be new, but Doom doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who keeps three magical followers around for decoration.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters December 18.
