AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Rumor May Reveal Surprising New Details About The Scarlet Witch's Role
A new rumor may shed light on what we can expect from Elizabeth Olsen’s long-awaited return as the Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Doomsday.
Earlier this year, Olsen gave the impression she wouldn’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. Still, most fans and insiders have assumed that Wanda Maximoff will make her way back into the MCU in at least one of the two massive crossover films.
Multiple scoopers have claimed to “confirm” her involvement, though reports have been inconsistent when it comes to her role in the story.
Now, Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus has shared some “unofficial” details that could point to Wanda’s return being very different than expected. According to Perez, the Scarlet Witch we meet in Doomsday may actually be a variant from a universe tied directly to the X-Men.
"[This] is a universe where Magneto is finally ruling Genosha as he had always pictured it; and we’d have like a ‘royal family’ type of situation with Erik, Pietro, Wanda, and Polaris.
“This is an idea that has been pushed since Multiverse of Madness, and then Deadpool and Wolverine, but it never feels like the right fit because it feels like it takes away from the overall plot. However, the main point they would like to explore with Wanda is the father-daughter relationship with Erik."
That father-daughter dynamic is something fans have wanted to see for years, and Perez suggests Doomsday may finally deliver it. He also shared a bit of insight into Sir Ian McKellen’s possible return as Magneto, offering this quote:
“A lifetime —several lifetimes— spent chasing haven after haven, promised land after promised land, and for what? Every time the gates of Eden slam shut in our faces, it breaks us a little more.”
If true, this would be a fascinating way to reintroduce Wanda, tying her directly to the X-Men and deepening her story with Magneto. However, Perez made it clear this is just one of several ideas that Marvel Studios has been toying with, and given the massive scale of Doomsday, it’s possible only pieces of this concept will make it into the final movie.
Both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars have been delayed, with Doomsday now set to open on December 18, 2026, followed by Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
The films will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are returning to the MCU after their successful run on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Following the big reveal at San Diego Comic-Con, the Russo brothers shared their excitement:
"Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves.”
Whether or not this Scarlet Witch rumor pans out, I’m curious and excited to see how this story plays out.
