AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Rumored to Have a Much Darker Tone With Very Little Humor
Marvel Studios might be dialing back the jokes for Avengers: Doomsday, and given what's at stake, that could be exactly what the movie needs. A new rumor suggests the upcoming MCU film will take a much more serious approach, with very little comic relief as Earth's Mightiest Heroes face Doctor Doom.
Humor has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years. Even when the world is falling apart, there's usually someone ready with a sarcastic comment or a perfectly timed joke. That's part of Marvel's identity, but it sounds like Avengers: Doomsday could be moving away from that formula.
According to MCU insider James Mack, the film will have an extremely serious tone, with only a handful of characters providing any laughs. Those characters reportedly include Red Guardian, Deadpool, and Johnny Storm, although their comedic moments will be limited.
Mack shared the following details: “The only characters who provide some comic relief in Avengers Doomsday, aside from the generally serious tone, are Red Guardian (who has a very minor role in the movie, staying at Avengers Tower with Bob while the rest go on the mission).
‘Deadpool (who makes a special appearance in all three acts of the film), and Johnny, with his usual sarcastic humor, although even he only gets a few moments. Doomsday is an extremely serious movie, designed to create a sense of unease and anxiety as the world approaches its end.”
That's an interesting direction for Marvel, especially considering how much comedy has become part of its superhero movies.
The report also offers a few interesting story details. Red Guardian apparently has a small role and spends much of the movie at Avengers Tower with Bob, while Deadpool reportedly appears throughout all three acts. Johnny Storm will still have his sarcastic personality, but even his time in the film will be kept to a minimum.
A more serious approach makes sense considering the arrival of Victor von Doom. With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, Marvel has an opportunity to introduce a villain who brings a different kind of energy and threat to the Avengers.
If the movie really is going for an atmosphere of dread and impending destruction, cutting back on the comedy could help make Doom feel more like a real terrifying threat.
Some of the MCU's most memorable moments have come when Marvel allows its stories to get serious, and it'll be interesting to see Avengers: Doomsday really lean into that. There's still room for humor, but when the fate of the world is on the line, I guess the danger should actually feel real.
Directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
What do you think? Would you like to see Marvel take a darker, more serious approach with Avengers: Doomsday, or do you prefer the usual mix of action, drama, and comedy?
