AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Star Lewis Pullman Teases Unexpected Twists for Marvel’s Biggest Heroes

With Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, Thunderbolts actor Lewis Pullman is hinting that audiences are in for some surprising developments when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes return to the spotlight.

By the end of Thunderbolts, Bob had no interest in embracing life as The Sentry again. The character’s immense power comes with a terrifying cost, thanks to the dark force known as The Void lurking within him. While he remained alongside the newly formed New Avengers, he wasn’t exactly eager to jump back into superhero action.

That may not be an option for long. The film’s post-credits sequence, which was shot on the set of Avengers: Doomsday by the Russo Bros., teased the next major chapter of the MCU. With Doctor Doom entering the picture, it seems inevitable that Bob will be pulled back into the conflict, whether he wants to be or not.

There has already been plenty of speculation that The Sentry could play a major role in the upcoming crossover event. Speaking with Deadline, Pullman kept story details under wraps but suggested that Marvel has some surprises planned for several fan-favorite characters.

"I’m excited to see it myself. So, I would be lying if I would just tell you what to expect, because I don’t know, I haven’t seen the darn thing."

He continued: "But I know for a fact that there are a lot of beloved characters who resume their journeys in very unexpected ways, that it’s going to really, I think, keep people wanting to probably see it more than one time."

Anyone familiar with The Sentry’s comic book history knows that manipulation and mind games often play a significant role in his story. Given Doctor Doom’s reputation, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where Bob becomes a powerful pawn in Doom’s larger plans.

Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but it certainly feels like Marvel is positioning the character as a major piece on the board for Avengers: Doomsday.

The movie will bring together heroes from three different universes as they find themselves on a collision course with a threat unlike anything they’ve faced before.

The movie is being directed by the Russo Brothers from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely, continuing the creative partnership that helped shape several of Marvel’s biggest hits, including the Avengers and Captain America franchises. Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, and Jonathan Schwartz are producing, with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer.

Marvel is keeping most of its secrets locked away for now, but fans should obviously prepare for some unexpected turns when familiar heroes return to the battlefield.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18.
