AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Writer Michael Waldron Says His Alternate LOKI Finale Could Still See the Light of Day

The Loki finale we got was powerful, emotional, and a great redemption story for the God of Mischief. But according to Avengers: Doomsday writer Michael Waldron, there was once a very different ending planned for Loki Season 1, one that fans might actually get to see someday.

In Marvel's Loki: The Art of the Series, it was revealed that Waldron’s original plan would have given Loki a far more uplifting sendoff. Instead of being trapped in the Time Variance Authority and discovering a version ruled by He Who Remains, Loki would’ve “gone off on to some of his own adventures in a different realm.”

Of course, Marvel Studios had bigger plans for the Asgardian trickster. They chose to continue his emotional arc into Season 2, where Loki’s sacrifice transformed him into the literal backbone of the Multiverse. But Waldron’s earlier vision clearly still lingers in his mind.

During a recent Reddit AMA, the writer dropped a tantalizing tease about that alternate ending. “I actually typed out the answer, but never say never, especially in the MCU,” he said. “Maybe one day you'll get to see it instead of read it.”

With Loki confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday and likely Avengers: Secret Wars. Waldron could be hinting that his unused Loki ending might somehow tie into these massive upcoming crossover films.

Reflecting on his time writing the show, Waldron said, “A million different endings. There’s always a different ending. But there was the original one season-ending, which I guess is just for me.”

He also praised Loki Season 2 head writer Eric Martin, explaining, “A lot of that work was done in tandem with Eric Martin, who was there on set. Because I was over lockdown in London, making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the pandemic, and Eric and I wrote the finale together, and he deserves a lot of the credit for that great final moment.”

Even though Loki’s fate now seems sealed as he sits on his throne at the end of time, Tom Hiddleston hinted on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this year that the story might not be over just yet.

When Kimmel asked him about Loki “holding all the timelines in the Multiverse,” Hiddleston grinned and said, “Still is...I mean, we haven't seen him do anything different.”

He added playfully, “See, this is where I run out of rope, Jimmy. We always do this dance, you and me. I can exclusively tell you...I will be there.

“There was the big thing they released of all the names on the back of the chairs, I didn't know, I was like, 'Oh I guess I'm in the movie.' In fairness, I did know I was in the movie. But I am so used to not knowing 'I'm in the movie.'”

So while Loki may now be the literal god holding together reality itself, Waldron’s tease suggests his story might not be finished, at least not in the way we think. If his alternate ending ever does make its way to screen, it could offer fans one more glimpse into the many lives of the God of Mischief.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
