AVENGERS: ENDGAME Director Joe Russo Says Releasing WONDER WOMAN 1984 on HBO Max is "Brave and Bold"
Due to the pandemic of 2020, the entertainment industry has changed dramatically. Theaters have shut down, attendance in the ones that are open are down, and big theatrical releases have been hard for the studios to pull off. It’s a strange time.
Warner Bros. recently revealed that Wonder Woman 1984 will be released on Christmas Day in theaters and on HBO Max. That’s a big move and one everyone is waiting to see the results of.
During a recent interview with Collider, Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo called the game-changing move “brave and bold”. He praised Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins and explained that there can be room for both digital and theatrical releases:
"I think Patty Jenkins said it best. She made something that she put an incredible amount of love and joy into, and now she's ready to share it with the world. I think it's incredibly brave and bold of her as a filmmaker. I do think that this is the future of the business. There can be room for both digital and theatrical, and in fact, both could perhaps enhance each other's business and experience."
If this turns out to be a success, I’m sure that we’ll be seeing a lot more of it, even after theaters are back up and running in full capacity again. I don’t think that’s gonna happen anytime soon, though. It’ll be interesting to see what this experiment leads to.
