AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Director Talks About If THE DEFENDERS Will Show Up

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe know that the two-part Avengers: Infinity War is going to be the culmination of everything that Marvel Studios has been doing since the first Iron Man came out in 2008. We know it's going to feature a massive battle against Thanos, but the thing no one is really 100% sure about yet is who, exactly, Thanos is going to be fighting. We all assume that he'll be facing off against every hero in the MCU, including The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, and many suspect that The Defenders — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, from the Netflix shows set in the same universe — will also join in on the action. But it turns out even the directors of the mega-blockbuster don't know if that's going to happen.

Anthony Russo, one half of the directing duo of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and both parts of Avengers: Infinity War spoke to an outlet at the Sao Paulo Comic-Con Experience (CCXP) in Brazil, and his comments indicate things are still being figured out:

When we start to serialize the telling of stories it’s difficult. You have to have a lot of control and focus on the course of history. The films are controlled by a group led by Kevin Feige, so they function as a unit. Other products, even if they are from Marvel, are controlled by others. Then there is the possibility of a crossover, but it’s more complicated. It is a smaller scale version of the problem that exists when remembering that Fox holds the rights to some of Marvel’s most popular characters, as does Sony and others. As storytellers, we only have control over what happens in Marvel movies, but everything is possible, Spider-Man (whose rights were held by Sony) became possible!

That just further clarifies the degree of separation between Marvel's movie and TV divisions. It seems like a crossover with The Defenders could happen, but they're not in play at the moment. It's still very early in the process, but after Civil War debuts next year, I'd expect that the Russo brothers are going sit down and start really hammering out the story beats for at least the first film, since it's supposed to hit theaters on May 4th, 2018.
