AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Discuss an Epic Battle Scene, The Infinity Stones, and Doctor Strange

The Avengers: Infinity War train continues to plow forward with new information from the directors of the film, Joe and Anthony Russo. Here, they share some additional insight on a gloriously epic battle that we will see, the Infinity Stones' place in the story and how things will get personal for Doctor Strange.

First off, there's going to be an insane battle sequence in the film and it sounds like it will put the airport battle from Captain America: Civil War to shame. While talking to Screen Rant, the directors were asked if they have a big splash page battle sequence similar to Civil War and they said:

Joe: We have like an equivalent that’s like, you know if you had a comic book and you open it up to your double panel and then you fold it out. And then you folded it out again and again.
Anthony: And you have another comic book laid out next to it.
Joe: So we have the equivalent of that in this movie.

That sounds pretty badass! There's no doubt it will blow peoples minds. In a separate interview with /Film, the directors talk about the Infinity Stones and their role in the story. Yes, we all know that Thanos is after them so that he can destroy half of the universe as a way to cleans it. But they offer a little bit more insight. Joe Russo says:

"In a very complicated manner. I think that traditionally in movies there’s a MacGuffin, sometimes the MacGuffin is a person, sometimes it’s a thing. I tend to find that it’s much more emotional when a person is involved. So we have quite a few MacGuffins in this movie that have different relationships with two different people; Doctor Strange is a bearer of an Infinity Stone, he has been charged with protecting that Infinity Stone. So there are a lot of characters that will come into direct conflict with Thanos."

They then go on to explain that the Infinity Stones are extremely important to the structure of the film and they are the "key driver". That's just another reason why I believe that Thanos will actually accomplish his mission.

One thing that we have to remember is that two of the stones are held by two Avengers. We've already seen an attempt to rip the Time Stone from Vision's forehead in the trailer, but the other hero Thanos will have to come face to face with is Doctor Strange, who holds the Time Stone. This makes things personal for Strange. in an interview with CB, Joe Russo explains:

"Doctor Strange, like a lot of the other characters, will integrate his universe into this film. And he will have a very personal stake in it because he's a bearer of an Infinity Stone. So clearly, Thanos is coming for the stones, he's going to run into Doctor Strange."

It won't surprise me to see Strange lose the stone to Thanos or one of his Black Order minions. We've seen him facing some kind of threat in the trailer. I just think Thanos is going to be too powerful to stop. Russo goes on to talk about bringing in the tones of all the different characters in this film, saying:

"There's a lot of characters in these movies that have tones that they're bringing from their own franchises. I think it's a very unique film. I don't think there are a lot of movies that have the kind of tone that this movie has, because it's a combination of franchises. I don't think we've ever seen that before, on this scale. It's got a really unique tone to it. I think it's propulsive. I would say it's an adventure film, but it has elements of a... We were inspired by 90s crime films when we were working on the script, so it's got an energy to it, a bit of a smash-and-grab energy."

This is going to be quite the spectacle. Hell, even if we know what is going to happen, this is going to be one hell of a wild ride!
