AVENGERS: SECRET WARS Rumor Claims Tony Stark is Returning, But Not the Iron Man Fans Remember

Tony Stark may be making a comeback in Avengers: Secret Wars, but this version of Iron Man sounds like someone who couldn't care less about saving the world.

A new Marvel rumor claims that an alternate version of the beloved MCU character will appear in the film, and he's apparently a far cry from the hero fans remember.

According to MCU insider James Mack, a Tony Stark variant will be involved in the story, and his personality sounds like a complete departure from the genius billionaire who sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

Mack shared the following description on X: “A Tony Stark variant will be involved in the story of Avengers: Secret Wars. He is being described as ‘uninterested, lazy, hates being a hero, and an alcoholic.'”

Well, that doesn't exactly sound like the Tony Stark we'd want protecting the multiverse. It's an interesting direction for the character, especially considering how much the original Tony evolved throughout the MCU.

He started out as an arrogant weapons manufacturer before becoming Iron Man and eventually one of Earth's greatest heroes. Stark's genius gave the Avengers some of their most powerful technology, including his advanced Iron Man armor, Arc Reactor technology, and defense systems.

Of course, not all his ideas worked out. His attempt to protect the planet with Ultron nearly destroyed it, while his EDITH satellite system created its own problems.

He also helped crack time travel in Avengers: Endgame, making it possible for the Avengers to recover the Infinity Stones and undo Thanos' devastating snap. His story ended with the ultimate sacrifice, making him one of the MCU's most important characters.

Now imagine a version of that same brilliant mind who has absolutely no interest in being a superhero. That's an interesting possibility, especially if he's forced to work alongside heroes who actually give a damn about saving reality.

Of course, none of this has been confirmed by Marvel Studios. Mack also recently addressed an earlier Secret Wars leak after a fan asked about its accuracy. He suggested that some details were probably legitimate, but that most of the information wouldn't end up happening.

There's also the big question of whether Robert Downey Jr. would play this alternate Tony Stark. The actor is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, so having him portray another version of Iron Man could make things even more interesting. If Marvel’s already got him, having him reprise his role as Stark isn’t too far-fetched.

Avengers: Doomsday is being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, with a massive ensemble cast, and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027.
