Bad Bunny's Spider-Man Universe Film Project EL MUERTO Has Been Pulled From Sony's Release Schedule
Sony Pictures has been developing a new Spider-Man universe film project with Bad Bunny based on the Marvel superhero character El Muerto. The movie is being developed by director Jonas Cuarón, but it was recently pulled from the release schedule.
The movie was supposed to be released on January 12, 2024, but now that slot will be filled by the Legendary Pictures movie The Book of Clarence, which stars LaKeith Stanfield.
The script for El Muerto is being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and the Marvel character is an antihero who is the son of a luchador next in line to inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto.”
When the project was first announced, Bad Bunny, aka Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, said in a statement: “To bring El Muerto to life is just incredible .. so exciting. It’s the perfect role for me and it’s going to be epic.” He later added:
"It's crazy. It's something that I can't believe it yet. I'm very happy about this character, about this opportunity to be the first Latin [lead]. It's not about I'm gonna be the first Latino making a role, it's gonna be about the first Latino main character, is the important thing. So it's something huge, and it will be epic. I know that people are gonna be proud of my work.”
With the film being removed from the release schedule, the project is either going to be delayed or canceled. It might just be delayed due to the writer’s strike, but we’ll have to wait and see. I will say, there didn’t seem like there was a lot of excitement or hype for the project when it was first announced.
El Muerto was first Introduced in 2006's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6, his real name is Juan-Carlos Sanchez, and he’s a Mexican luchador who wears a magical mask and he’s destined to face off with the mystical wrestling god El Dorado. “The powers and mask of the super powered wrestler el Muerto have been passed down generation to generation. Each wrestler had to prove themselves to their oppressor, el Dorado, so that they could remain alive and keep their powers. When Marcus Estrada presented his son Juan Carlos to el Dorado, Juan Carlos cowered in terror, unwilling to fight him. Marcus Estrada sacrificed his life to try and save Juan Carlos. Out of respect for his father's courage, el Dorado granted Juan Carlos ten years to travel and to become brave, and then to duel a masked wrestler and unmask him.”
