BARBARIAN Director Zach Cregger Teases His Idea For a Prequel Film
The director of Barbarian, Zach Cregger, previously said that he has no interest in making a sequel or prequel film. But, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have ideas for a prequel! Here’s what he previously said:
“Barbarian 2, not for me. Not gonna happen from me. Never say never, I could have an amazing idea tomorrow and be off to the races, but I doubt it.
"I don't think I'm necessarily interested in a prequel right now. I think it would have to tell the story of Frank [Richard Brake], and I'm personally not interested in making a movie about a man who abducts women. I'm more than happy to have that be the setting for another story like Barbarian is, but I don't want to watch that guy for an hour and a half. I could be thinking about it all wrong. Maybe I'll change my tune, but at the moment, no. There's a sequel I joke about that I would love to watch, which would be The Mother surviving her gunshot and having to integrate into society. She could attend community college and get her learner's permit and get a Tinder profile. That would be fun. I'd watch that movie. I don't know if I'd make it, but I'd love to see it."
During a recent interview with CB, the filmmaker was asked if he’d changed his mind about the possibility of a sequel or prequel, and he said “No.” But then he went on to tease an idea for a prequel and then kind of talked himself into wanting to make it. Here’s what he said:
"Matthew (Davis, "The Mother") and I have actually had conversations about what a prequel would be and I'm not looking (to do that). I'm in the throws of writing something else right now, so I'm not focused on it, but like yeah, there could be a prequel. I think if there was a prequel to this movie it would have to follow The Mother. It would have to make The Mother the main character and would have to tell her story. And I think that's interesting to me, I don't want to make a prequel about Frank abducting women, that's that's not interesting to me.
"If there's a way that we can crack that story, then I think that could be a really interesting cool movie, you know? So yeah, I guess the answer is the opposite of what I said when you first asked me. Look at that, I really turned around on that whole prequel thing."
Yeah, I think a prequel film about the mother would be an interesting film that would tell a tragic and sad story. By the end of Barbarian, you feel sympathy for The Mother. There’s a fascinating backstory there and I think fans of the first film would be curious about seeing that story.
What do you think? Would you want to see that story?
