BARBIE Screenwriter Reveals She Never Actually Finished A Script For The Film
The Barbie movie has been on again, off again for quite a while, and is shaping up to be one of the worst acquisitions Sony has made in quite a while. First the series lost Anne Hathaway, then Amy Schumer, but things seemed to be on the up and up when they secured Tully screenwriter Diablo Cody to write the script for the film. The film was set for a 2017 release date, but eventually was pushed off until 2020 as Cody revealed she just couldn't write a script for the film (via Slashfilm):
“To be honest, the timeline coincided with my writing Tully. I was really overwhelmed at the time, and I think I was really only capable of reaching in and pulling out something super personal. Look, I think the idea of a Barbie movie is super f—ing cool and I hope something goes in there and kills it. And I mean kills it in a positive way. I hope it’s a great movie is what I’m saying! [Laughs] Which is why I initially signed on to do it, which I think is a cool idea, especially now.
But for whatever reason, I’ve always had trouble, I’ve never been great at adaptations. I think when it comes down to it, I’m pretty much an original screenplay person.”
Cody is an Academy Award winning writer, so I won't doubt that when she said she couldn't make it happen, she meant it. That's a shame for Sony though, as they did drop a metric butt-ton of cash on acquiring the rights to a doll I don't even see kids playing with anymore, and they might have something to show for it two years from now. Do you think Sony should throw in the towel, or should they just go ahead and make sure they shove something out of this deal regardless of how bad it is? I vote the latter, because I think a trainwreck of a Barbie film would be amazing to watch. What about you?
