BATMAN: KNIGHTFALL Trailer Unleashes a Brutal Rated R Animated Trilogy Event

Batman is about to face one of the most punishing battles of his career in animated form. Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC have released the official trailer for Batman: Knightfall Part 1, the first chapter in an ambitious three-film animated adaptation of one of the Dark Knight’s most iconic comic book storylines.

Judging by the footage, fans should prepare for a much darker and more violent take on Gotham City than what we typically see in DC animation.

The upcoming trilogy brings the legendary Knightfall comic book arc from the early 1990s to the screen, telling the story of Batman's physical and psychological collapse at the hands of one of his most dangerous enemies, Bane.

According to the official synopsis: “When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”

That gives Batman an impossible challenge. Before he can even confront Bane, he must survive a city-wide nightmare as Gotham's most dangerous criminals flood the streets.

Fans familiar with the original comic know that Knightfall wasn't simply another Batman versus villain story. It was a defining chapter that tested Bruce Wayne in ways few stories ever have.

The voice cast is led by Anson Mount as Batman/Bruce Wayne, with Michael Mando taking on the role of Bane and Pablo Schreiber voicing Jean-Paul Valley, better known to comic fans as Azrael.

The first film is directed by Jeff Wamester from a script written by Jeremy Adams, and the creative team appears committed to delivering a faithful adaptation of the beloved storyline while embracing a harder edge than previous DC animated releases.

Batman: Knightfall Part 1 has officially been rated R for “strong bloody violence.” The trailer certainly backs that up, showcasing intense action and a Gotham that feels more dangerous than ever.

Knightfall remains one of the most influential stories in the character's history. It introduced one of the Caped Crusader's greatest defeats and changed the direction of the Batman mythos for years.

Seeing that saga adapted as a full trilogy gives the story room to breathe and allows many of its key moments to play out on a larger scale.

DC animation has built a strong reputation for tackling classic comic storylines, but this project looks like it may be one of its most ambitious efforts yet.

The trilogy is set to begin later this year, and after watching the trailer, it's clear that Gotham's Dark Knight is about to endure one of the most brutal chapters of his career.
