Beautiful Trailer For Bill Nighy's LIVING a Reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s Masterpiece, IKIRU

Sony Pictures Classic has released a beautiful trailer for Bill Nighy’s upcoming film Living. I had the opportunity to watch this film at Sundance earlier this year and it told such a wonderful and moving story.

The film is a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 film, Ikiru. Living is set in 1953 during a time where London is still recovering from World War II. In the story, Williams (Nighy), “a veteran civil servant and bureaucratic cog in the rebuilding of Britain post-WWII, expertly pushes paperwork around a government office only to reckon with his existence when he’s diagnosed with a fatal illness. A widower, he conceals the condition from his grown son, spends an evening of debauchery with a bohemian writer in Brighton, and uncharacteristically avoids his office. But after a vivacious former co-worker, Margaret, inspires him to find meaning in his remaining days, Williams attempts to salvage a modest building project from bureaucratic purgatory.”

Nighy gives a strong performance in the film, and as I said in my review, “he has to carry this whole movie on his shoulders, and he does it with grace. The character he plays is such a dull and uninteresting individual, but Nighy’s performance manages to keep you invested in the character's journey.”

Living is directed by Oliver Hermanus (Shirley Adams, Beauty, The Endless River, and Moffie) from a screenplay written by Kazuo Ishiguro. The movie also stars Alex Sharp, Adrian Rawlins, Hubert Burton, Oliver Chris, Michael Cochrane, and Aimee Lou Wood .

Living will be released in select theaters on December 23rd, 2022. This is a great thought-provoking film that may inspire you to look at life differently.
