Ben Affleck is Still Developing His McDonald's Monopoly Scam Movie and He Offers an Update
A couple of years ago it was announced that Ben Affleck would be directing a film about the crazy McDonald’s Monopoly scam. The film is titled McScam and Matt Damon was set to star in it.
While HBO is currently in the midst of airing a fantastic docuseries titled McMillions, which takes an entertaining deep dive into the insane true story, Affleck is still developing his film and offers an update. Here’s what he told Collider:
“We’ve gotten a new draft. That’s really good. Hollywood’s a weird place, because the person who was running the studio when they bought that script, just left that job. And the studio that was going to make it got bought by another studio. So there’s these moments where things sort themselves out, and you sort of see ‘Is this still a priority, or are they really interested in different kinds of movies?’ And I’m not sure whether or not, McScam, what kind of priority it is. We really like it. We’re still developing the script.”
The studios he is talking about there are obviously Fox and Disney. The last we heard, the script was being worked on by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. This is such a fascinating story and it’s going to make a great film if it ever happens.
The story is set between 1989 and 2001 and it follows an ex-cop named Jerome Jacobson who discovered a way to rig the McDonald’s Monopoly game. He ended up building a network of people including friends and family to pull the scheme. During this time there were no legitimate big prize winners for the game. All the winners were chosen by the people involved with the scam. Then the FBI got wind of it and took action to take down the operation.
A lot of people don’t know about this story because the news of it broke right around the time of the September 11th attacks and that overshadowed it. Obviously, there were more important things happening, so the story of the McDonald’s scam faded away.
I hope that Affleck gets the opportunity to make this movie! I’ve been watching the McMillions docuseries and I think it would make a for a great movie!
