Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Robert Pattinson and More Cast in Netflix's THE KING

Netflix has a new movie that they’re working on called The King. The film is inspired by the works Henry IV and Henry V by William Shakespeare and will be directed by David Michod. So, who’s going to star in this film?

For starters, we have Timothee Chalamet as Hal who goes on to become Henry V and Joel Edgerton as Falstaff. These are two cast members that people have known about for a while now, but here are the new members. Sean Harris will play William, Ben Mendelsohn will be King Henry IV, The Dauphin will be played by Robert Pattinson, Lily-Rose Depp will be Princess Catherine, Tom Glynn-Carney will be Hotspur, and Philippa will be played by Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie. Michod and Edgerton apparently co-wrote the script all the way back in 2013. In 2016, Edgerton talked about the film with the Happy Sad Confused podcast comparing it to Game of Thrones:

We’ve written ‘Henry IV’ and ‘Henry V’ as a period film, but with our own dialogue. For lack of a better word, [it’s] ‘Game Of Thrones’ meets Shakespeare only in that, you can watch ‘Game Of Thrones’ and understand what’s going on. I feel like, with complete deference to Shakespeare, there is something that happens when even the most intelligent people watch Shakespeare. They feel stupid, because he does the kind of roundabout version of telling you simple things. So, we just wanted to let the audience understand exactly what’s going on, and not just some people, but everybody.

Here’s the official logline for all interested:

Inspired by elements of Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Henry V, a young, disgraced prince, Hal inherits the crown and must learn what it means to be a king, guided by his one true friend, Falstaff.

The King is currently expected to be released on the streaming platform sometime in 2019.
