Ben Solo Was Luke Skywalker's First Jedi Student and I Don't Think THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT Broke Canon with Yoda's Lightsaber
The end of Episode 6 for The Book of Boba Fett saw Luke Skywalker setting up his Jedi school and training Grogu. At the end of the episode, Luke gives Grogu a choice to become his first student and continue his journey to becoming a Jedi or to choose to be with the Mando, his friend.
I was initially hoping to see Grogu choose to stay with Luke and continue his training. I also thought it would be cool to see him choose both, even though Luke said he could only choose one.
Well, I completely forgot about this, but in Marvel’s Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren comic book, it’s confirmed that Ben Solo, the son of Han and Leia, was Luke’s first student, which obviously means that Grogu will most likely choose his friend, which seems like the most likely choice for the character. So, I guess if they stick to canon, Grogu will leave Luke for Mando, and Luke will wait around for Ben to show up.
A lot of fans are pointing out that the reintroduction of Yoda’s lightsaber breaks canon, so could they break canon with Luke’s first student as well?
I’m not so sure that Yoda’s lightsaber being in Luke’s possession breaks canon, though. In the 2016 book called Star Wars: The Complete Locations, it’s claimed that Yoda had his lightsaber stored in his hut on Dagobah. If this is the case, Luke could have found it while going through Yoda’s stuff after he passed away.
But, then there’s the 2017 Darth Vader comic, which showed Palpatine publicly burning Yoda’s lightsaber as a propaganda stunt. So is this a continuity error? Well, comic book writer Charles Soule and Lucasfilm rep Matt Martin have made a point of saying there’s no canon error, and that Yoda would have built himself a second lightsaber.
So, I’m not quite sure that The Book of Boba Fett broke canon. If they didn’t break canon with the lightsaber, they won’t break canon with Luke’s first student.
What do you think about these specific plot points in the series?
