Benedict Cumberbatch and Micheal Shannon's THE CURRENT WAR Has a Release Date!

The Current War was originally supposed to be released back in 2017, but after the The Weinstein Company went bankrupt, this film fell into limbo. But, that is no longer the case! The newly formed 101 Studio will now be distributing the film and they’ve announced that the film will open in select theaters on October 4th, 2019, and everywhere on October 11th, 2019!

I was really excited about this movie as it told the true story behind the electricity battle that took place between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. For those of you who didn’t know, Edison’s company wanted to use direct current while Westinghouse thought alternating current was the way to go. This was a cutthroat competition.

This is a story that has fascinated me for a long time and it will be brought to life with a fantastic cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison, Michael Shannon as George Westinghouse, and Nicholas Hoult as a young Nikolai Tesla.

Here’s the synopsis that was released:

Three brilliant visionaries set off in a charged battle for the future in The Current War, the epic story of the cutthroat competition that literally lit up the modern world.  Benedict Cumberbatch is Thomas Edison, the celebrity inventor on the verge of bringing electricity to Manhattan with his radical new DC technology.

On the eve of triumph, his plans are upended by charismatic businessman George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), who believes he and his partner, the upstart genius Nikolai Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), have a superior idea for how to rapidly electrify America:  with AC current.

As Edison and Westinghouse grapple for who will power the nation, they spark one of the first and greatest corporate feuds in American history, establishing for future Titans of Industry the need to break all the rules.

The movie was directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) with producer Timur Bekmambetov producing. The movie also stars Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfadyen and Tuppence Middleton.
