BEWITCHED Reboot Series in Development by THE BOYS Executive Producer Judalina Neira
Sony Pictures Television is set to reimagine the iconic '60s sitcom Bewitched, which is sure to have fans of the classic TV series twitching their noses. This time, the magic will come with a modern twist, thanks to creator Judalina Neira, who is known for her work on the hit series The Boys. Neira, who recently inked an overall deal with Sony through her Famous Last Words Productions, will write and executive produce the reboot, promising an hourlong series that respects the original while navigating the complexities of today's world.
Lauren Stein, a Sony Pictures TV executive, expressed her excitement about Neira joining the Sony family, saying: “Judalina joined the Sony family with her work on The Boys, and we are incredibly proud of her contributions to supporting creator Eric Kripke’s vision. She brings passion and authenticity and has been such a champion for the representation and growth of Latinx writers — we knew we had to make a deal with her! We are so excited to have her call Sony home and can’t wait for what is to come as we deepen our relationship.”
The series is described as an “irreverent hourlong reimagination of the original, and Doug Robinson and Lauren Moffat are also on board as executive producers. They hope that the reboot will resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers.”
The original Bewitched series, which aired from 1964-1972, starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha, a witch married to an ordinary mortal man, Darrin Stephens (played by Dick York and later by Dick Sargent). I remember watching reruns of this show with my mom when I was a kid, and I loved it.
While Neira's vision for the reboot will be irreverent, it will maintain the charm and whimsy of the original while exploring new stories that reflect today's society.
Neira expressed her excitement about the project, saying: “It’s been such a pleasure telling wicked stories with the team at Sony TV these past few years. I couldn’t be more amped to join forces with them for this next big step in my career. And under our newly launched Famous Last Words Productions, I’m excited to both write and produce a full slate of hooky character-forward shows that dish up delight with bite.”
As of right now, there are no details about the cast, production timeline, and release date, but the project follows news of a previous attempt to bring Bewitched to the big screen.
As we wait for more details to emerge, it seems like Sony Pictures Television and Neira are looking to honor the legacy of Bewitched while casting a new spell that captures the hearts and imaginations of audiences.
