Bill Hader Steps Into Horror With Feature Directorial Debut THEY KNOW

If you’ve been wondering what Bill Hader has been cooking up since wrapping HBO’s Barry, here’s your answer and it’s not another comedy.

Hader is officially set to write, direct, and star in a new horror film titled They Know for MRC. Production kicks off in Los Angeles this spring, marking his first feature as a director.

The story leans into psychological horror. In They Know, Hader plays a divorced father who starts to suspect that his ex-wife’s new boyfriend isn’t just some random guy.

This mysterious man seems to be having an unsettling influence on their children, and the dad’s paranoia begins to spiral. It sounds intimate, tense, and potentially very creepy.

With this project, Hader joins a growing wave of comedy heavyweights who’ve found serious footing in horror like Jordan Peele, Zach Cregger, and more recently Curry Barker. If Barry proved anything, it’s that Hader knows how to balance dark material with sharp character work.

MRC is financing the film, which is based on an original story Hader developed with his longtime Barry collaborator Duffy Boudreau. Hader and Bob Graf will produce under Hader’s Hanarply banner, with Alyssa Donovan co-producing.

Hader taking on horror in an interesting evolution that could end up being really cool. If Barry showed us anything, it’s that he knows how to thrive in morally messy territory. Now he’s diving fully into the genre, and honestly, that’s exciting. A paranoid dad, a sinister presence, and Hader calling the shots.
