BIRDS OF PREY Director Cathy Yan Set to Direct Live-Action PAPRIKA Series for Amazon
Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey, Dead Pigs) is set to direct and produce a live-action series adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsui’s 1993 novel Paprika for Amazon Studios.
Paprika is described as a “character-driven sci-fi series with a mind-bending narrative centering around a technology that allows us to invade people’s dreams.” Yes, Christopher Nolan was clearly inspired by Paprika when he made Inception.
Legendary Japanese animator Satoshi Kon previously adapted the book into a critically-acclaimed anime film back in 2006. There has been talk about a live action adaptation since 2009, and at one point Wolfgang Peterson (The NeverEnding Story, Troy) was attached to direct a film.
In the story “Dr. Atsuko Chiba works as a scientist by day and, under the code name ‘Paprika,’ is a dream detective at night. Atsuko and her colleagues are working on a device called the DC Mini, which is intended to help psychiatric patients, but in the wrong hands it could destroy people's minds. When a prototype is stolen, Atsuko/Paprika springs into action to recover it before damage is done.”
I wasn’t a big fan of Yan’s Birds of Prey, but I hope that she manages to create a cool series adaption of Paprika. This should be an awesome series. We’ll just have to see how she handles the source material.
Yan will next write and direct a feature film titled The Freshening. What do you all think about Yan taking on the live-action adaptation of Paprika?
