BIRDS OF PREY Had The Lowest Box Office Opening of Any of The DCEU Films
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) ended up having a very disappointing weekend box office opening. When I went to see it opening night, the theater only had about 20 audience members, which wasn’t a good sign, especially for a screening in Los Angeles. The movie did come in number one at the box office with $33.2 million, but that is way below the projected amount that Warner Bros. was anticipating, which was $50 million.
At $33.2 million, Birds of Prey had the lowest weekend box office take of any of the previously released DCEU films. To put this in perspective, Shazam! had the previous lowest DC movie launch with $53 million.
I’m not really surprised that Birds of Prey didn’t do too well. While the movie was showered with a lot of love from a lot of critics who attended early screenings, audiences obviously aren’t buying into the hype. I didn’t think the movie was as good as lots of critics are saying it is. I was hoping that this movie would be good, but I felt it was a disappointing mediocre movie.
It’ll be interesting to see how DC and Warner Bros. proceed from here. I know Harley Quinn will be back for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, but will that Gotham City Sirens movie still get made? Will we see that Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy movie that Margot Robbie has been pushing for?
I seriously think that there’s a great Harley Quinn movie that could be made! The studio just needs to bring in the right storytelling talent to do it.
Why do you think audiences aren’t going out to see Birds of Prey?
