BIRDS OF PREY Officially Has an R Rating and Will Be Less 'Male Gaze-y' According to Star Margot Robbie

In a recent on-set interview with Vogue, Margot Robbie laid out the official R rating for Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and spoke about the different vibe viewers should get from this film. During the visit, the reporter, Irina Aleksander, got to accompany Robbie to a costume fitting, where she mentioned to Robbie that the costume of sports bra, orange track shorts and sequined blazer was less male fantasy, and more sporty spice.

That was when costume designer Erin Benach said, “That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer.” And Robbie added, “Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y.” So we are getting a film made by women, about women, for everyone to see. The women in this film will not be decorative or overly sexually objectified, and that’s refreshing. We can focus on the story and the action, which is sounding to be plentiful. In the same interview, Robbie’s co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead passed by after doing stunts as her character in the film, Huntress. She pulled down her track pants to show the ladies her bruised hip, and Robbie replied, “Shit, that looks legit.”

I’m pretty excited for the film. I think it is shaping up to be fun and exciting, we will just have to wait and see how well-written the story is. Are you excited for this female-driven flick?

Birds of Prey… is set to hit theaters on February 7, 2020.
