Black Knight's Appearance in BLADE Teased By Marvel Studios VFX Supervisor

In the final post-credits scene of Eternals, Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman opens a case that contains the Ebony Blade, which is an ancestral sword that is attached to his family line. At some point, he will take on the mantle of Black Knight, but that wasn’t going to happen in Eternals. As he reaches for the sword, a voice from off-screen asks, "You sure you're ready for that, Mr. Whitman?" That voice is Mahershala Ali’s Blade.

Because of how that played out, I just assumed that Dane Whitman will return in Marvel’s upcoming Blade film and that we will see him take on the mantle of Black Knight in the film. Well, Eternals VFX Supervisor Stephane Ceretti teased that this very well could be the case.

In an interview with CB, Ceretti explained that the mystical sword will be used in Blade in a bigger capacity than it was in Eternals:

"The funny thing is my second on the show, which is Mårten Larsson my additional supervisor, is actually going to be supervising Blade very soon. So I told him, I said, 'I'm giving that to you as a gift, use it wisely and make good out of it.' But I'm sure it's going to do actually even better."

As Larsson takes on the role of the VFX Supervisor of Blade, it’s explained that “one of the tasks of that position seems to be expanding the effects of the Ebony Blade.” It’s not 100% confirmed that Dane will show up in the film, but common sense says he will. I mean, that’s exactly what they set up at the end of Eternals.

When talking about that end scene involving Dane and the sword, Ceretti explained that magnetic ferrofluids gave him the inspiration for the sword's effects as it was calling for Dane:

"I showed Chloe [Zhao] these ferromagnetic fluids and things like that. And it's like these little pieces of metal that you bring a magnet, and they start to all align in a way. Actually, that effect was my idea that we should have the feeling that as he's getting his finger close to it, the blade almost wants to suck him in. 'I'm talking to you, and you're going to be mine.'"

I’m just excited to see what the character design of Black Knight will look like when Dane Whitman does take up the mantel.
