BLADE RUNNER 2 Gets An Official Release Date
After years of off-again, on-again development, Blade Runner 2 is finally happening. A lot of fans seem to be split about whether or not this is a good idea, and I'm right there with them: on one hand, they should probably just leave it alone. But on the other hand, if they are going to make a sequel, at least they have Ridley Scott producing, Ryan Gosling starring, Harrison Ford reprising his role as Rick Deckard, Roger Deakins as the cinematographer, and Sicario director Denis Villeneuve directing.
Alcon Entertainment has now officially given the movie a release date: January 12th, 2018. As you know, January is typically a dumping ground for terrible movies, so it's interesting that they'd put such a high-profile and highly-anticipated sequel in that month. I wonder if they're trying to establish it as a viable time for releasing a movie? Paramount did it with the original Cloverfield back in 2008, but since then, January has had a pretty rough track record. Maybe they'll give it a limited release in December before opening wide in January.
For what it's worth, Ford claims the script is the best thing he's ever read, and Scott once detailed what was going to be the opening scene (which may or may not stick) right here. Production begins this summer.
