BLADE RUNNER 2049 Almost Had a Different Title and You'll Either Like it or Hate It

Movie title changes aren't really a surprising thing. The titles of films go through changes all the time. Turns out, Blade Runner 2049 went through a title change of its own.

During an interview with Monsters and Critics, Alcon Entertainment rep Andrew Cosgrove revealed that the originally planned title for the film was Blade Runner: Androids Dream. It doesn't quite have the same ring as Blade Runner 2049, but I do understand what they were going for.

Blade Runner is based on Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and the fact that the androids dream in the story makes sense to use that title. But, that doesn't make it a good title for the film. Blade Runner 2049 works so much better.

According to Cosgrove, the reason that they ended up changing the name to 2049 is because it was simple and clean. He went on to say that he preferred the other title:

“I actually really like that title but with the benefit of hindsight, I’m very happy we ended up with the title we did because I think it’s a little leading.”

Screenwriter Michael Green went on to reveal that there were other working titles even before Blade Runner: Androids Dream. He explains:

“When Hampton wrote his treatment and draft, he titled it Acid Zoo, which is a terrific title. For a while that was their working title. He doesn’t know this, when I started working on it, the working title was ‘Queensboro’ because I always considered myself a New Yorker. I lived in Manhattan and I was on my way there. I know Hampton lives in Brooklyn and I was on my way, had my laptop on my lap in a cab and I’m like ‘all right, it’s the bridge between the two’. So for a long time, the working title was Queensboro.”

Obviously, I think Blade Runner 2049 was the way to go, but what do you think of the title Blade Runner: Androids Dream? What title do you prefer?
