BLADE RUNNER 2099's New Spinner Was So Awesome the Showrunner Couldn't Resist Taking Selfies With It
Few vehicles in science fiction are as instantly recognizable as the Spinner. Ever since audiences first saw the flying police car soaring over the rain-soaked skyline in Blade Runner, it has become one of the franchise's defining icons.
So when it came time for Blade Runner 2099 to introduce its own version, the creative team knew they had to get it exactly right.
According to showrunner Silka Luisa, that responsibility fell in part to production designer Paul Inglis, who had already worked on Blade Runner 2049 as supervising art director. His experience with the franchise helped ensure the new Spinner felt like a natural evolution instead of a complete redesign.
Luisa explained: “Paul Inglis had worked on 2049 [as supervising art director]. And it was so important to him to get the spinner right — to make sure it felt like it was an evolution, but it was still in concert with all the films. I think fans are gonna be really, really, really excited when they see it.”
That attention to detail is exactly what longtime Blade Runner fans want to hear. The Spinner isn't just another futuristic vehicle. It's one of the franchise's most recognizable pieces of technology, and updating it meant striking the perfect balance between honoring the past and imagining where that design would naturally end up decades later.
As excited as Luisa is for fans to finally see the new Spinner, she admits she may have been its biggest fan the day it rolled onto the set.
She recalled: “The day the spinner arrived on set for the first time was the one day I took a selfie.” Like many fans meeting something they've dreamed about seeing in person, Luisa initially tried to play it cool.
She laughed as she remembered: “First, I started to, like, casually lean against it and take a quiet one.” That strategy didn't last very long. Eventually, she embraced the moment completely. “And then I finally was, like, getting in there.”
It's a fun behind-the-scenes story that reminds you just how much affection the people making Blade Runner 2099 have for the franchise. Luisa has spoken openly about being a lifelong fan, and that excitement clearly didn't disappear once she became the person steering its next chapter.
