BLUE BEETLE Director Actually Pitched DC His Bane Movie Idea For Matt Reeves' Batman Universe

Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto previously shared that he originally wanted to direct a Bane movie for DC Studios. When he went to meet with the studio, that was the movie he wanted to pitch, and he explained: “I always thought that there was something interesting in exploring his reality and how a character like that comes to be."

The filmmaker has now offered more details on that, and it turns out that he actually did pitch the studio his Bane movie and he wanted it to be part of Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the director shared his experience, saying:

"You have to be prepared if they ask you what you want to do, and I’ve always wanted to explore the origin story of Bane. It’s super intriguing, especially where he comes from and the different topics that could be explored if we take into consideration that maybe he’s the hero of his own story. So it was very interesting to be able to talk about situations that have affected the Caribbean and Latin America for centuries through the character of Bane.

"So I came in with that idea, but that was Matt Reeves’ universe with The Batman, and I don’t know what’s going to happen now with this new regime. But that was my main attempt, and [DC executive] Galen [Vaisman] was like, ‘Okay, that’s a good idea, but we wanted to pitch you something.’ And that’s when he introduced the idea of Blue Beetle.”

Matt Reeves’ Batman universe is its own thing and James Gunn is not a part of what he is doing there and from what I understand, he has no say in what Reeves is doing. A Bane movie set in that universe would be incredibly interesting, and only time will tell if that ever happens. It seems like Soto would have to pitch his idea directly to Reeves if he wants any chance of his Bane movie to happen. The producer he met with at Warner Bros. obviously had his own agenda for getting Soto to direct Blue Beetle.

Hopefully, one day Soto does get to make his Bane movie! He’s definitely got his foot in the door now, and if Blue Beetle is a success, he could use that as leverage to get his Bane movie made.

Bane first appeared in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1993). He was created by writers Chuck Dixon and Doug Moench, along with artist Graham Nolan.

Bane was born and raised in the fictional Caribbean republic of Santa Prisca. His father, Edmund Dorrance (also known as King Snake), was a revolutionary who had escaped the island's court system. However, the corrupt government decided that his young son would serve out the life sentence in the penitentiary, Pena Dura ("Hard Penalty"), instead. This made Bane's life extremely brutal from the start.

Growing up in the harsh conditions of the prison, Bane became a formidable fighter and tactician. His intellectual curiosity led him to educate himself extensively in various fields through books provided by the Jesuit priest who looked after him. He learned multiple languages, studied many academic disciplines, and became a master strategist and escape artist.

In the prison, Bane was subjected to experiments with a drug known as Venom. While many others had died from the Venom experiments, Bane survived and discovered that the drug vastly increased his physical strength, although he needed to take it every 12 hours or suffer debilitating side effects.

Would you like to see Soto get to make a Bane movie?
