BLUE BEETLE Director Ángel Manuel Soto Says Jaime Reyes’ DCU Story Isn’t Over Yet
When DC Studios started reshaping its cinematic universe, one of the biggest question marks was what would happen to Blue Beetle. The film arrived during a rocky transition period, yet it also came with a major promise. Jaime Reyes wasn’t being left behind.
Now, director Ángel Manuel Soto is adding fuel to that hope and he sounds genuinely excited about what could come next.
While promoting his new project Wrecking Crew, Soto spoke with The Wrap and and confirmed that conversations with DC Studios are already happening. Whether it’s another live-action outing or a shift into animation, the filmmaker is ready to jump back in if the opportunity presents itself.
“I don’t think that chapter has been closed.”
Earlier comments from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn referred to Jaime Reyes, played by Xolo Maridueña, as the first official DCU character before Blue Beetle even hit theaters.
A straight-up sequel hasn’t been announced, and given the film’s box office results, it wouldn’t be shocking if DC took a different route. Blue Beetle wrapped its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing DCEU release, which often leads studios to rethink their approach.
That said, reports of an animated series have been circulating for a while now, and that might be the smartest next step for the character.
Maridueña himself seems confident that fans haven’t seen the last of Jaime Reyes. The actor previously shared his belief that Blue Beetle will return in some form, even if the specifics are still up in the air.
“I know we’ll see Blue Beetle again, whether it comes in the form of Blue Beetle 2 or wherever. It’s been really great to work alongside James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran], who have graciously folded us into their new universe even though it wasn’t part of what they came up with.
“It’s an honor. Now, where Blue Beetle heads in the future? I don’t know. But I can confidently say that we will see him soon.”
Blue Beetle centers on Jaime Reyes, a recent college graduate who returns home with big plans, only to find his life completely upended. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle.
We’ll just have to wait and see if DC Studios actually ends up continuing the Blue Beetle franchise.
