BLUE BEETLE Star Teases Film Will Feature DC Cameos
Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña is looking to build some excitement for the upcoming DC movie by teasing some familiar faces that will make cameos.
During an interview with The Wrap, the actor said: "I think if you're a DC fan, there's going to be more than just one character that you recognize. I can tell you that."
He obviously isn’t going to spoil who pops up in the movie, but this is the first time we’ve heard that other DC characters will appear in the movie. It’s also unclear if these characters have been featured in other DC films like Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, or if there will be new recognizable DC characters. It’ll be interesting to see.
James Gunn confirmed that Blue Beetle is the first DCU character that will be introduced under DC Studios, while the first DCU movie remains Superman: Legacy. Could these cameos be characters that could appear in future DC films?
Director Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) has planned out a trilogy of Blue Beetle films, but for those other films to get made, this sequel needs to be a hit for the studio. I’m not sure if that’s going to happen as I’m definitely seeing a lack of excitement for it. But, who knows! Anything is possible!
The story for the movie centers on Jaime Reyes, the alter ego of the Blue Beetle, a vigilante who has a scarab grafted onto his spine that gives him tremendous powers and the ability to emit blue energy. You get to see that transformation take place in the trailer, and it’s like family-friendly body horror. Here’s the synopsis:
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.
The Blue Beetle movie is directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The movie also stars Bruna Marquezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister, Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillén; and Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.
The movie is set to be released only in theaters on August 18, 2023.
