BLUE EYE SAMURAI Creators Explain the Four-Year Wait for Season 2 and Tease Mizu’s Brutal New Journey

Blue Eye Samurai fans have been waiting a long time to see Mizu return to action, but the wait is almost over. The acclaimed Netflix animated series is finally returning for Season 2 on January 19, 2027, nearly four years after its debut.

Now, the show's creators are explaining why the new episodes have taken so long and offering a few exciting details about where Mizu's bloody journey is heading next.

The series premiered in 2023 and quickly became one of Netflix's standout animated shows, earning major Emmy Awards and plenty of praise for its incredible animation, storytelling, and brutal action. Naturally, fans have been eager for more, but bringing Mizu's world to life takes some serious work.

In a recent interview with Netflix's Tudum, series creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green acknowledged the lengthy wait and expressed their appreciation for fans who have stuck around.

“First, we want to thank all of our viewers for waiting,” the creators stated. “Your enthusiasm is what energized us and helped us get here.”

They also explained just how much work goes into creating the show's incredibly detailed historical settings. “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither were 17th-century London or Edo Japan,” the creators said.

“The care that every single member of our team poured into researching those worlds, then crafting them brushstroke by brushstroke into breathtaking, moving art is nothing short of a miracle to us.”

That attention to detail is a big part of what made the first season so impressive, and Season 2 presents an entirely new challenge. Following the events of the Season 1 finale, Mizu is leaving Japan behind and heading to London, where her hunt for vengeance will take her into unfamiliar and dangerous territory.

Noizumi and Green describe London as “a thriving culture of illicit activity.” Mizu will find herself exploring a “dark underbelly amid a puritanical society that persecuted women as witches, closed bars and theaters, and even outlawed Christmas.”

It sounds like Mizu is trading one unforgiving society for another, and her arrival in England will bring some new personal challenges as well.

“For the first time, she’ll have to confront what it’s like to stand out as Asian in a sea of white faces,” the creators tease. “And then find out what it means to be a woman during one of the most oppressive times in English history.”

That's an interesting direction for the story considering how much of Mizu's identity and motivation has been shaped by the prejudice she's experienced throughout her life. Throwing her into 17th-century London opens the door to an entirely different set of enemies, conflicts, and cultural challenges. Of course, knowing Mizu, anyone foolish enough to get in her way probably won't have a very good day.

Season 2 will see Maya Erskine returning as Mizu, alongside Brenda Song as Akemi, Darren Barnet as Taigen, Masi Oka as Ringo, and Kenneth Branagh as Abijah Fowler.

The new season is also bringing in some additional talent, including Jonathan Pryce as Old Violet, Joel Kim Booster as Priest Ando, and Sherry Cola as Kuma. Details about how these new characters fit into Mizu's journey are still being kept under wraps.

Noizumi and Green are returning as writers and executive producers, with Erwin Stoff also executive producing. Jane Wu serves as supervising director and producer, while Blue Spirit is once again handling the animation.

Thankfully, fans won't have to endure another four-year wait after Season 2. Netflix already has a third and final season planned for 2028, meaning Mizu's story is heading toward its conclusion much sooner than expected.

It's great to finally have a clear release date, and the move to London sounds like it could give the series some fascinating new territory to explore. The first season set an incredibly high bar, but with the original creative team returning and a whole new world for Mizu to fight her way through, there's plenty to be excited about.

Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 premieres worldwide on Netflix on January 19, 2027.
