BLUE THUNDER Is the Next '80s Film to get the Remake Treatment
Columbia Pictures is set to develop a remake of the 1983 action thriller Blue Thunder. The original movie focused on a high-tech experimental helicopter and a police pilot who learns of the sinister implications of the vehicle. It was configured for law enforcement to use in combat against possible large-scale civil disobedience during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
It’s been forever since I’ve seen this movie, but I remember liking it. The script for the film is being written by Craig Kyle, who is an ex-Marvel Studios executive currently scripting Thor: Ragnarok.
The remake will feature a modern day take on the story, and will focus on the world's most advanced drone technology. There are a couple of other drone type films in development, including Ethan Hawke’s Good Kill and director Gavin Hood’s Eye in the Sky. The Top Gun sequel that has been in development over the last few years is also said to be about drones.
The original movie was directed by John Balham (WarGames) and starred Roy Scheider (Jaws). This has potential to be a pretty cool flick, but I doubt they'll get anyone as awesome as Scheider to take on the lead role.
