Blumhouse Hires a Director to Helm Stephen King's FIRESTARTER
Blumhouse and Universal Pictures are producing a new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel Firestarter, and they’ve hired Keith Thomas to direct it. I have no idea who Thomas is, but he directed an upcoming horror film called The Vigil.
As for the screenplay, it’s being written by Scott Teems, who recently wrote Universal and Blumhouse’s Halloween Kills with David Gordon Green.
King’s original story follows a young girl who develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon. This is will be the second time the novel has been adapted into a film. The first film was released in 1984 and starred a very young Drew Barrymore, who gave a great performance.
Producer Jason Blum had this to say in a statement regarding Vigil:
“Every once in a while you see a film that grasps and shakes you. Vigil did that for us, and we were eager to be a part of the film and to work with Keith and the BoulderLight team.
Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Productions will also produce Firestarter along with Drew Barrymore, who will executive produce. I’m happy to see that she’s involved. It’ll be interesting to see who ends up being cast in the lead role.
With the popularity of Stephen King on an upswing at the moment, it’s not surprising that this movie would get an updated adaptation.
