BOARD ROYALE Is a Battle Royale Card Game from Arvis Coming to Kickstarter
Board Royale is an upcoming “Battle Royale Survival Card Game” from Arvis Games. Some of the testers have described it as “Munchkin meets Catan.” I enjoy those two games, so my curiosity was piqued. The game appears to be very simple and has a lot of potential. The base game will feature 140 resource cards and 60 items card for a total of 200 cards. Of course, expansions are already planned and will undoubtedly be part of the Kickstarter. It is recommended that you play with 3-6 players, although the press release does mention that you can play with as few as 2 players and you can increase the number of players beyond 6 to further increase the difficulty.
My main concern, though, is the looting mechanic. If you defeat another player in Board Royale, you can take all of their stuff. I could see this as an easy way for one player to simply snowball to the winning position and have the early game be very fun, but then roll into no fun as one player becomes too powerful to even try to defeat. I think the Escape card mechanic is going to be the way to balance the looting mechanic though. Escape cards will let you win without defeating opponents, and I could see it be a thing where instead of fighting the player becoming too powerful, it turns into a game of can player 2 escape before player 1 kills them? That could potentially keep interest and fun into the late game. Of course, this is all speculation, as I have not played it yet.
