Boba Fett's Iconic Ship Slave I Has Been Renamed on Toy Packaging by Order of Disney
With the classic Star Wars Bounty hunter Boba Fett making his big comeback in the universe with The Mandalorian and his upcoming series The Book of Boba Fett, we are seeing more toys released for the character and there are going to be more to come.
Those toys include the bounty hunter’s iconic ship the Slave I. Well, that ship has been given a new name for the toy packaging, and that name is simply Boba Fett’s Starship. It’s explained that Disney doesn’t want to use the Slave I name anymore.
The news comes from an interview with LEGO Star Wars design director Jens Kronvold Frederiksen and lead designer Michael Lee Stockwell at Jedi News. This is how the conversation played out:
Jens: Then, the next one, also from The Mandalorian, is Boba Fett’s Starship.
Michael: Yes, I built another. We’re not calling it Slave I any more. This is Boba Fett’s Starship.
James: OK, why are we dropping the Slave I name?
Jens: Everybody is. It’s probably not something which has been announced publicly but it is just something that Disney doesn’t want to use any more.
There’s no explanation given as to why Disney changed the name, but I assume that it’s because they are uncomfortable with the “Slave” aspect of the name. There’s also no word on if Disney will avoid using the name of the ship in any of the upcoming Star Wars projects being developed. I will point out that the name of the ship has never been mentioned out loud in any of the films. But it has been named in books and comics.
Regardless of the name being changed on the packaging for the toys, there’s no doubt that the fans will just continue to call the ship Slave I. Also, Boba Fett's ship is still referred to as Slave I on the official Star Wars site. I don’t think they’ll end up erasing the name from Star Wars history.
As you might imagine, fans are in an uproar on social media of this and even Mark Anthony Austin, who appeared uncredited as Fett in the 1997 updated version of Star Wars: A New Hope said in a tweet:
