Bodybuilder Drama MAGAZINE DREAMS Being Shopped Now That Jonathan Majors Verdict Has the Actor Blacklisted
Last year, the bodybuilder drama Magazine Dreams was one of the most buzzed-about movies at Sundance Film Festival. The film was a heavy, difficult-to-watch story about a man driven by his obsession with pushing his body beyond its limits to achieve bodybuilding superstardom. Jonathan Majors gave an award-worthy performance, and the film was quickly bought by Searchlight Pictures, the indie label under Disney Studios. The film was set to be released in theaters this past December, but when news hit that Majors was found guilty of assault and harassment, the film was pulled and dropped from the studio. This happened as Majors was fired from Marvel, as well as the Dennis Rodman project he had been attached to.
Now the film is flailing, back in the hands of writer and director Elijah Bynum, who had a hit movie at this time last year. Searchlight Studios acquired the hot title last year out of Park City for an estimated seven figures; the movie, an 84% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, originally intended as a 2023 awards contender for Majors and Bynum.
I guess we will just have to wait and see where it lands, but it’s a shame that the filmmaker didn’t get the credit he was due.
