Book Review: TERMINATOR GENIYS: RESETTING THE FUTURE
I think it's fair to say Terminator Genisys has received mixed reviews, and even though I acknowledge the movie has a bunch of problems, my review is probably one of the kinder ones you'll see in the movie blogging circles. But for those of you who are interested in learning more about the film, I don't think there's a better option than David S. Cohen's newly-released Terminator Genisys: Resetting the Future, a deep dive into everything you could possibly want to know about the making of the film.
From obtaining the rights to the property, to courting star Arnold Schwarzenegger to return to the franchise, to writing the screenplay and beyond, the book tracks the early development of the movie and then moves right into detailed breakdowns of each character, complete with concept art and storyboards from production. There are gorgeous photos every step of the way, taking the audience through the process of designing all of the film's time periods, training the actors, and putting Schwarzenegger in his iconic makeup. Interviews with director Alan Taylor, the cast, and even visual effects artists give fans in-depth explanations of how the shoot went down.
There's even a tease of what's going to happen in the upcoming sequel to Genisys. When this movie was greenlit, the studio did so with the expectation that the film would kick off a new trilogy, with Arnold, Emilia Clarke, and Jai Courtney all set to return. One of the things the book reveals will happen in the sequel is that we'll finally find out who invented time travel in the first place. We know it wasn't Skynet, so who is responsible for that element of the story? We'll know in 2017.
From my perspective, Terminator Genisys: Resetting the Future is the definitive look at the making of the movie and a must-own for any huge fan of the film.
