THE WINCHESTERS and KUNG FU Have Been Canceled at The CW; The Actors Respond

The Winchesters has been canceled after one season at The CW, with the network also canceling the reboot of Kung Fu after three seasons.

The Supernatural prequel series, The Winchesters, followed demon hunters - Sam and Dean’s parents, John (Drake Rodger) and Mary (Meg Donnelly), telling the story of how the couple met as teens and how they ultimately came together to save the entire world. The story is told from Dean’s (Jensen Ackles) perspective, marking the first return of Ackles’ character since the series finale in November of 2020.

Inspired by the original Kung Fu created by Ed Spielman, the reboot of the 1970s series follows Nicky Shen (Olivia Liang), whose quarter-life crisis causes this young Chinese American woman to drop out of college and go on a life-changing journey to an isolated monastery in China. But when she returns to San Francisco, she finds her hometown is overrun with crime and corruption and her own parents Jin (Tzi Ma) and Mei-Li (Kheng Hua Tan) are at the mercy of a powerful Triad.

The CW said in a statement:

“As we reimagine the new CW, we had to make some tough programming decisions. We thank our partners at Warner Bros. and the casts and creative teams of ‘Kung Fu’ and ‘The Winchesters’ for all their hard work, creativity and dedication.”

Jensen Ackles took to social media in an effort to mobilize Supernatural fans on a campaign to find the canceled Supernatural prequel a new home.

Kung Fu’ Star Olivia Liang said on an instagram post: “It has been the honor of my f**king life to work with this group of humans. we made a historic three seasons of a show. first predominantly Asian cast in a one hour network drama. first Asian American female showrunner. i don’t have enough words (or room in this carousel) to express my gratitude to my show-runners, my writers, my cast, my stunt team, my (expletive) crew… i love you all. I truly won the lottery. they are all the kindest, smartest, funniest, most hard working people in the biz,” Liang continued. “i am so so so proud of the work we did. thank you to everyone who invited us into your homes and watched our little show that could. cheers to Kung Fu, the show that changed my life forever 🤍 i love you Nicky Shen.”

Are you bummed about the cancelation of either of these series?
